As RDR2 tries to tell a true-to-life tale of the Western frontier, it includes the harsh struggles of boomtowns that turned to ghost towns as the railroad moved through, the growth of urban centers as industrialization progressed, and the challenges of famine and plague that threatened settlers. Construction is also halted at the time players visit, and they'll find that the MacFarlane family is nowhere to be found.
Much of the buildings still haven't been finished, including the general store, barn, and foreman's office. As such, players can't visit the region of the original game until the epilogue of RDR2, which is around four years before John Marston finds himself helping out at the Ranch. Players are unable to reach MacFarlane's Ranch in the early chapters of the game, due to the incident in Blackwater that put a Dead or Alive bounty on Arthur Morgan's head. Likewise, MacFarlane's Ranch, which first appeared in the opening of Red Dead Redemption, is still under construction and vacant by the time players reach it in RDR2. Rockstar paid attention to painstaking details in RDR2's narrative and world to create a nuanced prequel, from the scaling back of urban growth in Blackwater to the railroads in RDR2 still being built.
RDR2 takes place before the perilous end of the Van der Linde Gang, and in doing so, it rolls back the clock on the frontier in ways that add both to the original game's narrative and to the story of the frontier as a whole - exemplified in the changes to MacFarlane's Ranch between the two games. Both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2tell powerful, moving tales about the rapidly changing American West at the turn of the 20th century.
